Poem Response

The Purpose of Poetry
This old man grazed thirty head of cattle
In a valley just north of the covered bridge
On the Mississinewa, where the reservoir
Stands today. Had a black border collie
And a half-breed sheep dog with one eye.
The dogs took the cows to pasture each morning
And brought them home again at night
And herded them into the barn. The old man
Would slip a wooden bar across both doors.
One dog slept on the front porch, one on the back.

He was waiting there one evening
Listening to the animals coming home
When a man from the courthouse stopped
To tell him how the new reservoir
Was going to flood all his property.
They both knew he was too far up in years
To farm anywhere else. He had a daughter
Who lived in Florida, in a trailer park.
He should sell now and go stay with her.
The man helped bar the doors before he left.

He had only known dirt under his fingernails
And trips to town on Saturday mornings
Since he was a boy. Always he had been around
Cattle, and trees, and land near the river.
Evenings by the barn he could hear the dogs
Talking to each other as they brought in
The herd; and the cows answering them.
It was the clearest thing he knew. That night
He shot both dogs and then himself.
The purpose of poetry is to tell us about life.

Title: The Purpose of Poetry
Author Jared Carter

I thought the man killed himself because after he had heard about how his land was going to be flooded and that he had to move on, he knew that he couldn’t. All he had ever known was cattle, the dirt under his nails, and going into town. He had decided he was going to end where he started. I thought he killed his dogs because those were like his companions. The poem featured stanzas and alliteration. Also symbolism was displayed in the poem. One of the symbols included when he would put down the wooden bar to close the barn. This could symbolize the end of something.

Life Without Sight.

                      Life Without Sight

I love my sight. Just the thought of being able to see all of the beautiful colors the world has to offer, is amazing. With sight you can see signs and stop lights to be able to drive. Also with sight you can see all the numbers and letters you need to know for the knowledge you need to have for life. Sight helps you out with everything in life from playing sports, driving, reading, and just seeing your friends.

If I didn’t have sight I would be devastated. It would be harder for me to learn in school. Also when I turn 16 I wouldn’t be able to drive. I wouldn’t be able to see signs that said stuff like “DANGER,” and “KEEP OUT.” My sports career would probably be down the drain. The bottom line is that without my sight my life would be a whole lot tougher, that’s why I’m thankful I still have my sight.

Baseball

I walk through the gate,
to what I call home.

I can smell the fresh peanuts and hot dogs,
a smell that doesn’t get old.

I had been waiting all year,
it was finally baseball season.

All the anticipation had paid off,
I finally get to do what I love.

The pop of a glove,
the crack of a bat.

The sounds of baseball,
the greatest game on Earth.

I live and breathe baseball,
it’s just something I have to have.

I’ve been playing this game all my life,
and I don’t plan to stop anytime soon.

America’s pastime,
it will always be.

My favorite thing to do,
it will always be.

“Really I get to?”

“Yes!” I  yelled as I got home from school.  I would be out for the next 2 weeks.  I was so ready for Christmas.  And it came faster than ever.
It was Christmas Eve, and all of my family members came over to my house. I got tons of gifts. We played lots of cool games too. It was about twelve o’clock till I went to bed!  When I went to bed I couldn’t go to sleep at all. I tossed and turned all night long.  I guess it was that I just couldn’t wait till Christmas morning, but let me tell you it was worth the wait.
I woke up on Christmas morning and almost flew to the living room to see what I had gotten.  There was tons of gifts waiting on me. I got a pellet gun, video games, and countless clothes!  I was filled with excitement. After opening up all of the gifts my family went to church.  Then when we got back some of my family members were back at my house.  We had so much fun.  Then when one of my family members was trying to leave, they couldn’t back out, because another car was behind it. It so happened to be my aunt’s car. It needed to be backed out too.  I stood up and asked her if I could back it up.  As I knew I was joking, she surprisingly said “Yes.”  I said “Really I get to?”  I jumped in the car to back it up. Honestly I was nervous. I started to back it up.  Every time she would say “Slow down,” I would slam on the brakes.  Then a car drove by. I had to cover my face with embarrassment.  The good thing though, was that I didn’t hit anything.  That experience was probably one of my most memorable moments over Christmas break.

We are the Champs!

“Hey Dad you ready to go?” I said. “Yeah let’s go.” said my dad. We were on our way to Paris, Texas. The reason why we were going there was because I had a State baseball tournament. It was for my 11 and under All-star baseball team. We had beat Hallsville, Longview American, and Longview National to get there. Longview American had beat us out the past 3 years. But now it was time for PAYBACK! When we won that game the team went crazy. Probably because we’ve never got past District before, and it felt like we got the monkey off our back, especially since we beat Longview American in the District Championship. Now it was time for State.
I didn’t know if we could win State, because I knew it would be hard to win. Right before our first game the nerves kicked in, and I deffently got butterflies in my stomach.
Our first game was against Cooke County. We had the lead the whole game, until in one of the late innings Cooke County took a two run lead, But we didn’t get down on our selves, and we came back to win. Next we flew by Sulphur Springs in game 2, by turning a double play to win it. After that we played Center. It was neck and neck, until we took a 5 run lead. Center had one more chance to beat us in the last inning, and they tried. They hit 2 homeruns and cut our lead down to 1, be we held on and won. Next was Kilgore and we easily won that one. Then we played Mt. Pleasant. It was close until the end. They hit to win that game. Our hearts were broken. The next day we played Kilgore and we scored 10 runs on them. And before we knew we were playing in the State Championship. And guess who we were playing? Mt. Pleasant. The team that had already beat us earlier in the tournament. It was a close game all the way through. In the last inning it was 7 to 5 Mt. Pleasant. It was bases loaded, and 1 out. Then bang a hit up the middle. Seven to six now. Then all of the sudden another hit up the middle! We win State! Everybody went crazy. It was amazing.
